About the Programme
Q: Is the MBBS/MD degree from BIMI equivalent to degrees from other countries?
A: The BIMI Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree is awarded under the authority of the licensed institution and the Kyrgyz Republic's Ministry of Education and Science. It is equivalent in academic standing to MBBS degrees from other WHO-recognised institutions worldwide. The degree enables graduates to sit licensing examinations in their home country and, depending on results, to practise medicine in their home country or abroad. 'Equivalence' in practical terms depends on successfully passing your home country's licensing examination (FMGE/NExT for India, MDCAT/PMDC exam for Pakistan, PLAB for UK, USMLE for USA, AMC for Australia) — which BIMI prepares you to do.
Q: Is the programme taught entirely in English?
A: Yes. Without exception. All lectures, tutorials, PBL sessions, clinical skills training, examinations, and clinical placements are conducted in English. There are no Russian-medium or Kyrgyz-medium sessions. Our faculty are required to deliver all teaching in English. This is a defining feature of BIMI and one of our primary advantages for students planning to practise or continue their education in English-speaking countries.
Q: What is the total duration of the programme?
A: The BIMI MD programme is a six-year programme. Years 1–5 are campus and hospital-based academic years. Year 6 is the compulsory supervised internship year, conducted at BIMI-affiliated teaching hospitals in Bishkek. Completion of the full six years, including the internship, is required for the award of the MD degree. There is no option to skip the internship year.
Q: Can I transfer credits from another medical school to BIMI?
A: BIMI considers applications for lateral entry / credit transfer from students who have completed 1–2 years at another recognised medical school. Transfer is not automatic — it requires subject equivalency assessment by the Academic Council, a qualifying entrance assessment, and the availability of a seat in the relevant year. Transfers into Years 3, 4, or 5 are considered exceptionally and only where specific and compelling circumstances apply. Contact the Admissions Office to discuss your specific situation.
Q: Does BIMI offer postgraduate (MD/MS) programmes?
A: BIMI's current primary focus is the six-year undergraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme. Information about any postgraduate or fellowship programmes will be published on the BIMI website as they become available. Currently enrolled students interested in postgraduate pathways are encouraged to speak with the Career Development Office about postgraduate opportunities at partner institutions.
About Recognition & Licensing
Q: Is BIMI listed in the WHO AVICENNA Directory?
A: Yes. BIMI is listed in the World Health Organization AVICENNA Directory of Medical Schools, which is the primary global reference for medical school recognition used by national licensing bodies worldwide. You can verify our listing directly at the WHO AVICENNA Directory website (avicenna.ku.dk) by searching for 'Bishkek International Medical Institute' or 'Kyrgyz Republic'.
Q: Are Indian students who graduate from BIMI eligible to appear in the NExT examination (formerly FMGE)?
A: Yes, subject to BIMI maintaining its NMC India recognition and the student having a valid NEET-UG score at the time of admission. Graduates of NMC-recognised foreign medical institutions are eligible to appear in the NExT (National Exit Test) examination, which has replaced the FMGE as the Indian licensing examination for foreign medical graduates. We strongly advise Indian applicants to verify current NMC recognition status directly on the NMC India website (nmc.org.in) at the time of their application, as recognition listings are reviewed periodically.
Q: Can BIMI graduates practise medicine in the UK?
A: BIMI graduates can pursue registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) of the United Kingdom by sitting and passing the PLAB 1 (a written MCQ examination) and PLAB 2 (a practical OSCE examination). BIMI's curriculum is aligned to the PLAB 1 content outline, and our OSCE training is directly relevant to PLAB 2. Successful completion of the PLAB process, combined with a job offer from a UK NHS employer, enables full GMC registration and the right to practise medicine in the UK.
Q: Can BIMI graduates pursue residency in the United States?
A: Yes, through the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) pathway. BIMI graduates must sit and pass all three steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE Steps 1, 2 CK, and 2 CS / Step 3), then obtain ECFMG certification, before being eligible to apply for US residency programmes through the NRMP Match. This is a competitive and demanding pathway — but it is achievable, and BIMI's curriculum alignment with USMLE content gives our graduates a meaningful advantage.
Q: Is BIMI recognised in the Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar)?
A: Recognition in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is handled by each country's health authority. Generally, graduates of WHO-listed medical schools are eligible to apply for medical registration in GCC countries, subject to passing the relevant country's licensing process (e.g., DOH UAE, HAAD, Saudi Commission for Health Specialties / Saudi Medical Licensing Examination — SMLE). BIMI graduates have successfully obtained medical registration in several GCC countries. We recommend verifying current recognition status with the relevant health authority before applying.
Q: Will BIMI's recognition status change after I enrol?
A: BIMI takes the maintenance of its national and international recognition very seriously. Our institutional operations, infrastructure, faculty qualifications, and curriculum are maintained to the standards required by relevant regulatory bodies. Recognition listings are periodically reviewed — this is a standard process for all internationally operating medical institutions. No institution can guarantee that its recognition status will remain unchanged for the full six years of your programme. What BIMI can guarantee is our commitment to maintaining and expanding recognition, and our proactive engagement with regulatory bodies to ensure our graduates are not disadvantaged. We strongly recommend students check recognition status annually throughout their studies.
About the Admissions Process
Q: How long does it take to get an offer letter after I submit my application?
A: Once we have received your complete application — including all required documents — the Admissions Committee reviews and issues a decision within 5–7 working days. The Offer Letter is then issued within 3–5 working days of a positive decision. The most common reason for delays is incomplete document submission. Ensure you submit all required documents simultaneously — submitting them piecemeal extends the review period significantly.
Q: Do I need to attend an interview?
A: A formal admission interview is not a standard requirement for the majority of applications. Where the Admissions Committee requires additional information — typically for borderline academic cases or where certain documents require clarification — a brief, informal video call (20–30 minutes via Zoom or WhatsApp) may be requested. This is not a 'pass or fail' examination — it is a clarification conversation. You will be given at least 3 working days' notice and the option to reschedule if the proposed time is inconvenient.
Q: Can I apply if my NEET score is low (qualifying but not high)?
A: Yes. BIMI's admission requirement for Indian applicants is a valid, qualifying NEET scorecard — there is no minimum NEET score stipulated by BIMI itself beyond the NMC qualifying percentile. However, students with low NEET scores who gain admission to BIMI should be aware that the NExT examination in India (which replaced FMGE) is academically demanding. A low NEET score may indicate a knowledge gap that will need to be addressed during your six years at BIMI. Our academic support systems are designed to help all students grow — but the academic effort required to succeed cannot be avoided regardless of the admission threshold.
Q: Can I apply to BIMI and other universities simultaneously?
A: Yes. We understand and respect that applying to multiple institutions is a responsible and prudent approach to securing your medical education. There is no exclusivity requirement in the BIMI application. Paying the Application Processing Fee and receiving an Offer Letter does not commit you to enrolling — your commitment is confirmed only when you accept the offer AND pay the Seat Deposit. At that point, we ask that you withdraw applications from other institutions if you do not intend to attend them, as courtesy to other prospective students.
Q: What happens if I am denied a Kyrgyz Republic student visa?
A: In the event of a genuine visa refusal by the Kyrgyz Republic immigration authorities (not caused by incomplete or incorrect documentation submitted by the applicant), BIMI will refund your Seat Deposit in full, minus a $50 administrative processing fee. You must provide BIMI with a copy of the official visa refusal letter within 30 days of refusal. BIMI's International Student Services team will then work with you to address the grounds for refusal and reapply for the following intake.
Q: Can I apply for the February intake instead of September?
A: Yes, subject to seat availability in the February intake. The February intake is a secondary intake and is not available for all year groups in every academic year. Contact the Admissions Office to confirm February intake availability for your intended year of entry. The academic year content for February intake students is adjusted so that the programme aligns and merges with September intake students by the start of Year 2.
About Fees & Scholarships
Q: Can fees be paid in local currency (Indian Rupees, Pakistani Rupees, Nigerian Naira, etc.)?
A: BIMI's official fee currency is USD. Payments made in local currencies are processed at the prevailing exchange rate on the date of payment. We strongly recommend using the Flywire international payment platform, which allows payment in your local currency at a competitive exchange rate with full payment tracking. This avoids surprises from exchange rate fluctuations between the time you plan your budget and the time you pay.
Q: Are there any hidden fees not listed on the website?
A: No. BIMI's fee structure is published in full on this page and in every Offer Letter and Admission Agreement. There are no hidden fees. Every fee charged by BIMI has a specific purpose and is clearly labelled. The only fees that are unpredictable are supplementary examination fees (which only apply if you fail a subject) and elective additional services (e.g., document attestation, extra transcript copies). You are never charged for services you have not explicitly requested.
Q: Can I get a scholarship if my NEET score is low?
A: BIMI's Academic Excellence Scholarship requires strong academic performance (85%+ PCB + NEET 550+). Students with lower academic profiles may be eligible for the Need-Based Bursary if they demonstrate financial need alongside a minimum 70% PCB aggregate. Academic and financial scholarships address different criteria — a low NEET score does not disqualify a student from need-based support.
Q: What happens to my scholarship if I fail a year-end examination?
A: Scholarship renewal is conditional on meeting the stated academic performance criteria. Failing a subject in the annual examination (including where a supplementary pass is subsequently obtained) may result in scholarship suspension for the following year. Students whose scholarship is suspended may apply for reinstatement at the start of the subsequent academic year by demonstrating that they have met the reinstatement criteria. The Scholarship Committee reviews these cases on their individual merits.
About Student Life & Support
Q: Is Bishkek safe for international students?
A: Yes. Bishkek is consistently rated as one of the safest capital cities in Central Asia. The city has a low crime rate relative to comparably sized cities in South Asia, Africa, or Eastern Europe. BIMI's student population includes students from over 25 countries, many of whom report feeling genuinely safe and welcomed in the city. BIMI's campus security team and CCTV systems operate 24/7. Students are given a comprehensive safety orientation upon arrival. Our International Student Services team is available for any welfare concern at any time.
Q: What is the food like in Bishkek for international students?
A: Bishkek has a surprisingly diverse food scene. The city has a range of restaurants, cafeterias, and markets offering Central Asian, Russian, Korean, Chinese, Indian, and Middle Eastern cuisine. BIMI's campus cafeteria serves hot meals daily and accommodates vegetarian, vegan, and halal dietary requirements. Students who prefer to cook for themselves will find all necessary ingredients in Bishkek's well-stocked supermarkets. The cost of food in Bishkek is significantly lower than in most cities in Western Europe, North America, or even India's major cities.
Q: What support is available for students who are struggling academically?
A: BIMI has a comprehensive academic support framework. Every student is assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) — a faculty member who monitors their progress and provides individual guidance. Additional support includes small-group tutoring sessions, LMS-based adaptive learning modules that identify and target weak areas, peer-assisted learning programmes, drop-in faculty consultation hours, and formal academic counselling for students who fail mid-term assessments. No student is left to struggle alone — but proactive engagement with support systems is the student's responsibility.
Q: Can I work part-time while studying at BIMI?
A: Kyrgyz Republic student visa regulations generally restrict international students from formal employment during their studies. However, students may be eligible for paid research assistance roles within BIMI (subject to academic performance and Research Cell availability) and for paid teaching assistant positions in senior years. Working outside BIMI is not recommended and may not be legally permitted under student visa conditions — check with BIMI's International Student Services Office for the current regulatory position for students from your country.
Q: What happens if I need to return home for an emergency during the academic year?
A: Students experiencing genuine personal or family emergencies may apply to the Dean of Student Affairs for compassionate leave. Leave of up to 30 days may be approved without academic penalty; longer periods are considered case by case and may require deferred examination sittings or a semester repeat depending on the duration of absence. Students must maintain their 80% attendance requirement over the full year — absences during normal teaching periods count toward this threshold. Inform BIMI's administration as soon as you are aware of a potential emergency, even before travel is confirmed.
Q: Does BIMI have a student council or student clubs?
A: Yes. BIMI has an active Student Council that represents the student body in Academic Council discussions and contributes to institutional policy on student welfare, campus facilities, and academic matters. BIMI also has clubs and societies covering medical debating, research (the BIMI Student Research Society), community health outreach, sports, arts and culture, and national/regional cultural associations for different student communities. New clubs can be proposed and established by students with the support of the Dean of Student Affairs.
About Career Prospects
Q: What is the FMGE / NExT first-attempt pass rate for BIMI graduates?
A: BIMI does not publish a composite pass rate figure because our graduates are distributed across multiple licensing examination attempts and jurisdictions, making a single figure potentially misleading. What we do publish — and what we encourage prospective students to verify — is the individual success of our graduates in clearing licensing examinations. We can connect prospective students with BIMI alumni who have cleared FMGE/NExT for direct testimonials. Contact the Career Development Office at careers@bimiedu.com to speak with an alumni mentor in your intended licensing jurisdiction.
Q: Does BIMI help with residency applications after graduation?
A: Yes. BIMI's Career Development Office provides personalised support for graduates pursuing postgraduate residency training. This includes guidance on USMLE step examination strategy and timing, ECFMG certification application process, Personal Statement review and editing for residency applications, Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE) / Dean's Letter preparation, reference letter guidance, and interview preparation for residency programme interviews. We also maintain a mentor network of BIMI alumni currently in residency programmes who are available to advise and support graduating students.
Q: Can BIMI graduates practise in the Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait)?
A: BIMI graduates from WHO-listed institutions are generally eligible to apply for medical registration in GCC countries through each country's health authority licensing process (DHA/DOH in UAE, SCHS in Saudi Arabia, CMOD in Oman, QCHP in Qatar, etc.). Licensing in GCC countries typically requires passing a country-specific medical licensing examination, provision of verified academic credentials, and a period of supervised practice. BIMI's recognition in individual GCC states should be verified directly with the relevant health authority at the time of application — recognition listings are updated periodically.
Q: Does BIMI issue a transcripts and certificates that are internationally recognised?
A: Yes. BIMI issues official academic transcripts, degree certificates, and supporting documentation in both English and Russian. Documents requiring attestation for use in a specific country (e.g., apostille for Hague Convention countries, consular attestation for non-Hague countries) can be processed through BIMI's Document Attestation service. The MD degree certificate is issued under the seal of BIMI and bears the signatures of the Rector and the relevant academic authority of the Kyrgyz Republic.
