Events & Reunions

The BIMI Alumni Association believes that the relationships built during medical training — with classmates, with mentors, with the institution itself — are among the most enduring and professionally valuable bonds a physician will ever form. Alumni events and reunions are not merely social occasions; they are professional development opportunities, mentorship encounters, and the renewal of a shared commitment to medicine that began in the halls and wards of BIMI.

All alumni events are organised by the BAA Events Committee in collaboration with BIMI's Campus Events Team. Events are held both in Bishkek (on campus) and in regional locations where alumni chapters are active. A growing programme of virtual events ensures that alumni anywhere in the world can participate regardless of travel constraints.

Annual BIMI Alumni Homecoming Weekend

The BIMI Alumni Homecoming Weekend is the flagship annual event of the BAA — a three-day celebration of the BIMI community bringing together graduates from all cohort years for reconnection, professional development, and celebration. The weekend has become one of the most eagerly anticipated dates in the BIMI calendar, consistently drawing alumni from across the world back to Bishkek. Spouses and family members are welcome at social events.

Programme Highlights:

•       Friday Evening — Alumni Welcome Reception: Informal welcome gathering at BIMI campus with current student representatives. Reconnect with classmates, meet new graduates, and tour campus developments since your time.

•       Saturday Morning — Professional Development Day: A full-day programme of CME workshops, specialty panel discussions, career development seminars, and an Alumni Research Showcase featuring graduates who have published or presented original research.

•       Saturday Afternoon — Cohort Reunions: Dedicated time for each graduating cohort to gather, take group photographs, and reconnect with classmates and former faculty in a semi-structured setting.

•       Saturday Evening — Alumni Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony: Black-tie optional dinner at a premier Bishkek venue. BIMI Rector's Address; BAA President's Reflection; Annual Alumni Awards (Distinguished Alumnus/a of the Year, Young Achiever, Community Service Award, Global Health Award, Research Excellence Award). Speeches, music, and celebration.

•       Sunday Morning — BIMI Campus Open Day for Alumni Families: Campus tours, simulation centre demonstrations, student performances, and farewell breakfast.

Annual Graduating Class Farewell & Induction Ceremony

BIMI Convocation & Graduation Ceremony — Annual

The BIMI Convocation is the formal academic ceremony at which graduating interns are awarded their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree and officially inducted into the medical profession and the BIMI Alumni Association. This is a solemn, joyful, and deeply meaningful event attended by graduates, their families, all BIMI faculty, clinical supervisors, and representatives of BIMI's hospital partner network. The ceremony includes the formal conferral of degrees, the reading of the Hippocratic Oath / Declaration of Geneva, and keynote addresses by the Rector and the BAA President.

Programme Highlights:

•       Formal academic procession — faculty in academic regalia.

•       Rector's address to the graduating class.

•       Conferral of MD degrees — each graduate receives their degree certificate from the Rector.

•       Recitation of the Declaration of Geneva (modern version of the Hippocratic Oath) by the graduating class in unison.

•       BAA President's welcome to the new class of alumni.

•       Student valedictory address — delivered by the academically distinguished graduate of the cohort.

•       Medal and prize presentations — Academic Excellence Medal, Best Clinical Student Prize, Best Researcher Prize, Compassion in Medicine Award.

•       Group photography — individual cohort and full faculty + graduate photographs.

•       Post-ceremony reception for graduates, families, and faculty.

Virtual Events Programme

For alumni who cannot travel to in-person events, the BAA runs a rich programme of virtual events throughout the year:

•       Monthly Webinar Series — 'BIMI Alumni Speaks' — a one-hour webinar hosted on the first Tuesday of each month featuring a BIMI alumnus speaking on their specialty, career pathway, or a clinical topic of wide interest. Free to all BAA members.

•       Quarterly BAA Town Hall — an open virtual meeting hosted by the BAA President for all alumni, covering BAA updates, institutional news from BIMI, and open Q&A with the BAA Council.

•       Licensing Exam Prep Bootcamps (Virtual) — 3-day intensive virtual bootcamps for alumni preparing for FMGE/NExT, PLAB 1, or USMLE Step 1, led by alumni who scored in the top decile of those examinations. Held twice yearly (January and July).

•       Annual Alumni Research Webinar — a half-day virtual symposium at which BIMI alumni researchers present their most recent work to the wider alumni community. Held in June each year.
