Clubs & Societies

Campus life, wellbeing, and co-curricular development

Clubs & Societies reflects student life beyond academics, including wellbeing, accommodation, and student engagement.

Clubs & Societies

Life at BIMI is about more than examinations — it is about developing the whole person. Our vibrant ecosystem of student-led clubs and organisations provides every student with the opportunity to pursue passions, develop leadership skills, and make a lasting contribution to the BIMI community.

3.1  Why Get Involved?

Research consistently demonstrates that medical students who engage in extracurricular activities alongside their studies report higher levels of wellbeing, stronger professional networks, and better long-term career outcomes. At BIMI, we actively encourage all students to join at least one club or society during their time with us.

Club membership provides students with:

•       A constructive outlet away from the pressures of the academic curriculum

•       Opportunities to develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills

•       Connections with like-minded peers, alumni, and healthcare professionals

•       Practical experience in event organisation, fundraising, and community engagement

•       A richer and more fulfilling overall student experience

3.2  Academic & Medical Clubs

BIMI Medical Science Society (MSS)

The Medical Science Society is BIMI's flagship academic club. It hosts weekly seminars, journal clubs, and clinical case discussion sessions led by students and facilitated by faculty. The MSS also coordinates visits to affiliated hospitals and organises guest lectures from practising specialists in surgery, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and other disciplines. Membership is open to all years.

Anatomy & Physiology Study Club

Designed to support students in mastering the foundational sciences, the Anatomy & Physiology Club runs peer-led tutorials, practical anatomy sessions in the skills lab, and revision workshops ahead of major assessments. Senior members often serve as informal tutors for junior years.

Research & Innovation Club

The Research & Innovation Club is BIMI's centre for student-led scientific inquiry. Members learn to design and conduct research projects, work with data, write and submit manuscripts, and present at academic conferences — including BIMI's own annual Research Week. The club has produced several student publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Public Health & Preventive Medicine Society

This society focuses on population health, disease prevention, and health promotion. Activities include community health screenings, awareness campaigns on topics such as diabetes, mental health, and vaccination, and collaborative projects with local NGOs and the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health.

Emergency Medicine & First Aid Club

Students receive hands-on training in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) fundamentals, trauma management, and first aid. The club also runs certified BLS workshops open to the wider BIMI community and general public.

Clinical Skills & OSCE Preparation Club

This club runs OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) preparation sessions throughout the academic year, helping students build examination technique, clinical reasoning, and practical skills under time pressure. It is especially popular in the run-up to annual assessments.

3.3  Cultural & International Clubs

International Students Association (ISA)

The ISA is the primary network for BIMI's international student community. It provides a welcoming environment for students from abroad, organises cultural exchange events, and serves as a first point of contact for students navigating life in a new country. The ISA also assists students with visa queries, administrative processes, and cultural adjustment challenges.

Cultural Heritage Society

This society celebrates the extraordinary cultural diversity of the BIMI student body. It organises International Cultural Night (one of the most attended events of the academic year), cultural exchange dinners, language exchange sessions, and awareness programmes about global traditions and medical practices.

Language Exchange Club

With students from over 30 countries, BIMI is a natural environment for language learning. The Language Exchange Club connects native speakers of different languages for informal conversation practice sessions — popular pairings include Russian, English, Chinese, Arabic, and Hindi. The club also runs beginner sessions in Kyrgyz and Russian for international students.

3.4  Sports & Wellness Clubs

BIMI Sports Club

The BIMI Sports Club organises competitive and recreational sports activities throughout the academic year. Active sections include:

•       Football (men's and women's 5-a-side and 11-a-side teams)

•       Basketball

•       Volleyball

•       Badminton

•       Table tennis

•       Track & field / athletics

•       Chess & mind sports

The Sports Club coordinates BIMI's participation in inter-university sports competitions across Bishkek and participates in national student sport leagues.

Yoga & Mindfulness Society

Recognising the unique mental health pressures faced by medical students, the Yoga & Mindfulness Society runs regular sessions in guided yoga, breathing techniques, and mindfulness meditation. Sessions are facilitated by trained student instructors and are free of charge for all BIMI students.

Hiking & Nature Exploration Club

Taking advantage of Bishkek's stunning natural surroundings, this club organises weekend hiking trips and nature excursions to nearby destinations including Ala Archa National Park, Issyk-Kul Lake, and the Tian Shan mountain trails. Trips are suitable for all fitness levels and are among the most beloved extracurricular activities at BIMI.

3.5  Community Service & Social Impact Organisations

BIMI Volunteers Network

The Volunteers Network coordinates student volunteering activities with hospitals, clinics, schools, and community organisations in and around Bishkek. Students log volunteer hours and can receive recognition on their academic transcripts. Activities include health education workshops, free health screenings, blood donation drives, and support for vulnerable populations.

Environmental Sustainability Group

This student group promotes eco-conscious practices on campus and in the wider community. Initiatives include campus clean-up drives, waste reduction campaigns, tree-planting projects, and advocacy for sustainable procurement in university operations.

3.6  Starting a New Club

Any group of five or more registered BIMI students may apply to establish a new club or organisation. Applications are reviewed by the Student Council and Student Affairs Office on a rolling basis. Approved clubs receive:

•       Formal recognition and listing on the BIMI website and Student Portal

•       Allocated room-booking privileges for regular meetings and events

•       Access to the Student Activities budget for events and materials

•       Faculty advisor assignment to provide guidance and mentorship

•       Promotion through official BIMI communications channels
