4.2  Mental Health & Psychological Support Services

Medical education is intellectually rigorous and emotionally demanding. BIMI takes the mental health of its students extremely seriously, providing proactive, non-judgmental, and fully confidential psychological support services.

Counselling Centre

The BIMI Counselling Centre is staffed by qualified counsellors and psychologists who provide one-to-one counselling sessions to students experiencing:

•       Academic stress, burnout, and performance anxiety

•       Adjustment difficulties (particularly for international students)

•       Depression, anxiety, and mood disorders

•       Grief and bereavement

•       Relationship and interpersonal difficulties

•       Trauma and distress resulting from clinical placements

•       Identity-related challenges

•       General emotional wellbeing concerns

Appointments can be made confidentially through the Student Portal, by email, or by walking in during drop-in hours. All sessions are strictly confidential and do not form part of a student's academic record.

Group Support Programmes

In addition to individual counselling, BIMI runs structured group support programmes including:

•       Stress Management Workshops — practical techniques for managing pressure during examinations and clinical rotations

•       Resilience-Building Programme — a 6-week structured course helping students develop coping skills and emotional resilience

•       Peer Support Network — trained student peer supporters available for informal conversations and signposting

•       Mindfulness & Meditation Sessions — weekly group sessions facilitated by the Yoga & Mindfulness Society

24/7 Crisis Support

BIMI partners with accredited mental health crisis lines to provide students with 24/7 access to emergency psychological support. Contact details for crisis resources are prominently displayed throughout campus, on the Student Portal, and in the Student Handbook.

All mental health services at BIMI are strictly confidential. Seeking support is an act of strength, not weakness. Our counsellors are here to support you — without judgment.

4.3  Academic Support Services

Learning Development Unit (LDU)

The Learning Development Unit provides structured academic support to students at all stages of their medical programme. Services include:

•       Study Skills Workshops: Regular workshops covering effective note-taking, time management, active recall techniques, spaced repetition, and examination strategies tailored to medical education.

•       Academic Writing Support: One-to-one consultations and workshops on scientific writing, case report preparation, and essay construction.

•       Numeracy & Statistics Support: Assistance for students who require additional support with biostatistics, data interpretation, and pharmacology calculations.

•       Learning Difficulties Support: Confidential assessment and support for students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences. Reasonable adjustments (including extended examination time) are arranged in coordination with faculty.

•       At-Risk Student Programme: Students who are identified as academically at risk receive a structured support plan including additional tutoring, more frequent personal tutor meetings, and tailored learning resources.

Personal Tutor System

Every BIMI student is assigned a Personal Tutor — an academic staff member responsible for monitoring their academic progress and personal wellbeing throughout their studies. Personal Tutors meet with their students at least once per semester and are available to students who need additional guidance outside of scheduled meetings.

4.4  Financial Hardship & Emergency Support

BIMI understands that financial difficulties can arise unexpectedly and can have a severe impact on a student's ability to continue their studies. The Student Welfare Fund exists specifically to provide emergency financial assistance to students facing unexpected hardship.

•       Emergency Bursaries: One-time grants available to students facing acute financial emergencies (e.g., family bereavement, serious illness, loss of sponsorship).

•       Payment Plan Arrangements: Students struggling with tuition fee payments may apply to the Finance Office for a structured instalment plan.

•       Food Pantry: A discreet on-campus food bank providing non-perishable food items and meal vouchers to students in need.

•       Financial Guidance Sessions: Regular sessions run by the Student Affairs Office covering budgeting, money management, and awareness of scholarship opportunities.

Applications for financial support are handled with complete confidentiality by the Student Affairs Office.

4.5  Disability & Accessibility Services

BIMI is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible educational environment for students with disabilities or long-term health conditions. Our Disability Services team works with students to assess individual needs and arrange appropriate reasonable adjustments, including:
